IPTV playlists can include categories you'd rather children didn't browse. Fortunately, most players include a parental PIN, and streaming devices add their own restrictions on top.

This guide covers both layers. It's part of our IPTV tips series.

Quick answer

To set up IPTV parental controls, open your player's parental settings, create a PIN, lock adult and unsuitable categories (including VOD), and hide groups you don't want shown. Add device-level restrictions on Fire TV, Google TV or Apple TV so children can't open the player without permission.

Layer 1: Player parental controls

  1. Find parental settings

In your player's settings, look for Parental control, Lock or PIN.

  2. Set a PIN

Choose a code that isn't easy to guess — not 0000 or a birthday.

  3. Lock categories

Select the channel groups to protect. Many players can lock adult groups automatically.

  4. Lock VOD categories too

Films and series sections have their own categories to lock.

Setup notes for popular players are in TiviMate and IPTV Smarters.

Hide channels entirely

Locking still shows a category exists. Hiding removes it from view altogether. Use your player's group manager to hide categories, then protect the settings menu with the PIN so they can't be unhidden. More in organising IPTV channels.

Layer 2: Device restrictions

Device-level parental controls
DeviceWhereWhat it does
Fire TVSettings → Preferences → Parental ControlsPIN for purchases, app launches and content ratings
Google TVProfiles → Kids profileRestricted profile with approved apps only
Apple TVSettings → General → RestrictionsLimit apps and content by rating
Smart TVsSettings → General / SafetyLock apps or inputs with a PIN

Device restrictions are useful for stopping younger children opening the IPTV player at all. Device setup notes: Firestick, Android and Apple.

Profiles and separate devices

If your player supports profiles, create a kids' profile with only suitable categories. Alternatively, set up a device in a child's room with only child-friendly favourites, protected by device restrictions.

Limitations to know

  • Category locks rely on channels being grouped correctly; review categories occasionally.
  • A PIN is only as strong as its secrecy — change it if you think it's been seen.
  • Locks are per player and per device; set them up on every device children use.

IPTV parental controls: frequently asked questions

Yes. Most IPTV players let you lock or hide categories behind a PIN. Device restrictions add another layer.

No. Locks are set per player on each device, so configure them everywhere children watch.

Use device-level restrictions or choose a player that supports them — see our IPTV player comparisons.

Conclusion

Combine player locks with device restrictions, and set them up on every device children use.
