The right internet speed for IPTV depends on the quality you watch and how many screens play at once. The number on your broadband contract is the maximum to the router; what matters is the stable speed that actually reaches your streaming device.
Use the recommendations below as a planning baseline, then test on your own devices.
Recommended speed per stream
- SD (480p) — around 5 Mbps of stable speed.
- HD (720p) — around 10 Mbps.
- Full HD (1080p) — around 15 Mbps.
- 4K Ultra HD — 25 Mbps or more. See 4K IPTV streaming for device requirements too.
These figures include sensible headroom above the stream's own bitrate, because live video can spike during fast motion such as sport.
Calculating speed for several screens
Add the requirement of each stream that might play at the same time, then add about 20% for everything else on your network. For example, one 4K TV plus two Full HD streams needs roughly 25 + 15 + 15 = 55 Mbps, plus headroom — about 65–70 Mbps in total.
This calculation also helps you choose how many connections to get. Our multi-screen IPTV page explains connections in detail.
How to test your speed properly
Test on the streaming device
Install a speed test app on the Firestick, TV or box itself — phones near the router give misleadingly high results.
Test at peak time
Run a test in the evening, when the network is busiest.
Look at stability, not just speed
Repeat the test a few times. Big swings between results point to Wi-Fi interference.
Ways to improve speed at the TV
- Use an Ethernet cable, or a powerline adapter if cabling is difficult.
- Connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi and keep the router out of cabinets.
- Use a mesh system in larger homes.
- Pause large downloads while streaming.
If your speed is fine but streams still stutter, the problem is likely the device or player — continue with the IPTV buffering fix guide.
IPTV internet speed: frequently asked questions
For a single HD stream, usually yes — if the connection is stable. For Full HD, 4K or several screens at once you will need more.
Very little. IPTV mainly uses download speed. Upload only matters if other people in the home are video calling or uploading at the same time.
It can work on a strong 4G or 5G signal, but watch your data allowance — an hour of HD can use several gigabytes.
