IPTV EPG: A Full TV Guide for Your Live Channels

A good EPG turns a long channel list into a real TV guide. See how IPTV guide data works and how to fix the most common EPG problems.

The IPTV EPG — electronic programme guide — is the on-screen grid that shows what is on now, what is next, and what is coming up over the next days. Without it, live TV is just a list of channel names. With it, browsing feels like using a traditional set-top box.

This page explains where EPG data comes from, how to make sure it loads, and how to fix the issues people run into most often.

How IPTV guide data works

EPG data is usually delivered as an XMLTV file: a structured list of programmes with start times, titles and descriptions. Each programme is tied to a channel ID. Your IPTV player matches those IDs to the channels in your playlist and draws the guide.

When you sign in with Xtream Codes, the guide is fetched automatically. With an M3U playlist you may need to paste a separate EPG URL into the player's settings — see M3U and Xtream Codes explained for the difference.

Loading the EPG in your player

  1. Add your subscription

Sign in with Xtream Codes, or add your M3U URL.

  2. Add or refresh the guide

Open the player's EPG settings and add the EPG URL if one is required, then tap Refresh or Update EPG.

  3. Give it a minute

Large guides take time to download and index, especially on streaming sticks.

  4. Set automatic updates

Choose a daily refresh so the guide never runs out of upcoming listings.

Fixing missing or wrong EPG data

  • Guide is empty — refresh the EPG manually and check the EPG URL has been entered correctly.
  • Times are shifted by one or more hours — adjust the EPG time offset in the player and check your device's time zone.
  • Some channels have no listings — not every channel publishes guide data; this is normal for some local or event channels.
  • Guide stopped updating — clear the player's cache, then refresh. If the problem continues, contact support.

If live channels also stutter while you browse, that is a separate issue — the IPTV buffering guide covers network and device fixes.

EPG and catch-up work together

On channels that support it, the EPG is also the doorway to IPTV catch-up. Scroll back in the guide to a programme that has already aired, select it, and play it from the start. It is one of the most useful features of a well-configured IPTV setup.

IPTV EPG: frequently asked questions

Yes, guide data is provided for channels that publish it. When you use Xtream Codes login, most players load it automatically.

The time zone on your device or the EPG offset in your player is mismatched. Adjust the offset in the player's EPG settings until listings line up.

Once a day is enough for most people. Set the player to refresh automatically so upcoming listings are always available.
