A black screen is alarming, but the cause is usually simple. The key clue is sound: black with sound points to video decoding or display settings; black without sound points to the stream, the connection or the HDMI chain.

This article is part of our IPTV troubleshooting guide.

Quick answer

An IPTV black screen with sound usually means a decoding problem: switch between hardware and software decoding or between TS and HLS. If only 4K channels are black, check HEVC and HDR support and the HDMI port. If everything is black, check the HDMI cable, input and power-cycle the TV and device.

Decoder fixes

Switch the player's decoder between hardware and software for the affected channel, and try the other stream format (TS/HLS). Explained in IPTV player settings.

4K and HDR fixes

  • Check your device supports HEVC decoding — see 4K IPTV.
  • Make sure the HDMI port on the TV supports 4K and HDR; on some TVs you must enable enhanced HDMI mode for that port.
  • Try a certified high-speed HDMI cable.
  • Turn off auto frame rate temporarily to see if a mode switch is failing.

Stream fixes

If a single channel is black with no sound on every device, the stream may be temporarily down. Try again later, refresh the playlist and report it if it continues. If many channels do it, see channels not loading.

HDMI fixes

  1. Check the input

Make sure the TV is on the right HDMI source.

  2. Reseat the cable

Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends; try another HDMI port.

  3. Power-cycle in order

Turn off TV and device, unplug for 30 seconds, then power the TV first and the device second.

  4. Reset resolution

Many devices have a key combination to cycle resolutions if the TV can't display the current one — check your device's help pages.

IPTV black screen: frequently asked questions

Usually a video decoding issue. Switch between hardware and software decoding, or change the stream format in the player.

Your device or HDMI port may not support HEVC or HDR correctly. Check device support, enable enhanced HDMI on the TV and use a high-speed cable.

If it's black on every device, the stream may be down. Try later and report it to support if it persists.

Conclusion

Use sound as your clue: with sound, look at decoding and display settings; without sound, look at the stream or the HDMI chain.
