How Much Data Does IPTV Use? SD, HD and 4K Explained

From roughly a gigabyte an hour in SD to many gigabytes in 4K — here's how to estimate what IPTV will use.

On unlimited broadband, data use doesn't matter much. On a capped plan or mobile data, it matters a lot. The amount depends almost entirely on the bitrate of the stream you watch.

This article shows how to estimate it. It's part of our home network guide.

Quick answer

IPTV data use depends on the stream's bitrate: roughly 1 GB per hour in SD, 2–4 GB in HD and Full HD, and about 7–11 GB or more in 4K. Multiply by hours watched and screens in use to estimate your monthly total.

How to calculate data use

Data per hour = bitrate (megabits per second) × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte. So a stream at 5 Mbps uses about 5 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 2,250 MB, or roughly 2.25 GB per hour.

Bitrates vary by channel and content — fast sport uses more than a news studio — so treat any figures as estimates.

Estimated data use by quality

Approximate IPTV data use (estimates from typical bitrates)
QualityTypical stream bitrateApprox. per hour
SD2–3 Mbps0.9–1.4 GB
HD (720p)4–5 Mbps1.8–2.3 GB
Full HD (1080p)6–8 Mbps2.7–3.6 GB
4K (2160p)15–25 Mbps6.8–11 GB

Note these are *stream bitrates*, which are lower than the *connection speeds* we recommend in the internet speed guide — that guide includes headroom so streams don't stall.

Estimating a monthly total

Multiply hours watched by the per-hour figure. For example, three hours of Full HD every evening at about 3 GB per hour is roughly 9 GB a day, or around 270 GB over a 30-day month. Add a second screen and it roughly doubles.

How to reduce data use

  • Choose HD instead of 4K on smaller screens — the difference is hard to see.
  • On phones, pick SD or HD channel versions.
  • Close players when you stop watching; some keep streaming in the background.
  • Download nothing in the background while streaming on a capped connection.

IPTV on mobile data

IPTV works on strong 4G and 5G signals, but data adds up quickly: a 90-minute match in HD can use several gigabytes. Watch on Wi-Fi where possible, especially when travelling.

How much data does IPTV use: frequently asked questions

Roughly 1 GB per hour in SD, 2–4 GB in HD and Full HD, and 7–11 GB or more in 4K, depending on the channel's bitrate.

Yes. 4K streams typically use several times more data than HD, so check your plan's allowance before watching in 4K regularly.

Yes, on a strong signal, but choose lower-quality channel versions to save data.

Conclusion

On capped broadband or mobile data, choose HD over 4K on smaller screens and close players when you stop watching.
